Use an Akuvox Door Phone as a Wiegand Reader for a Third-Party Access Control Panel (Hartmann, Brivo, HID, others)
The building already has an access control panel, such as Hartmann, Brivo or HID. The Akuvox door phone can be its card and PIN reader. The Akuvox reads the card or PIN and hands the number to the panel over Wiegand. The panel decides, and the panel opens the door.
- Which Wiegand format does the reader port use: 26-bit or 34-bit?
- Does the panel want PINs one key at a time (a 4-bit or 8-bit burst per key), or as one card number?
- Does the panel need a facility code (also called a site code)?
Which Akuvox models work
Every Akuvox door phone and access terminal with a Wiegand output can do this.
| Type | Models |
|---|---|
| Door phones, R series | R20A, R20B, R20K (Wiegand 26, 34, 44 or 58), R25K, R27, R28, R29 |
| Door phones, S series | S532, S535, S538, S539 |
| Door phones, X series | X912, X915, X916 |
| Door phones, E series | E12, E16, E18 |
| Access terminals | A01, A02, A03, A05, A08, A094, A095 |
Wiring
Run three wires from the Akuvox to the panel's reader port. Then wire the door lock to the panel.
| Akuvox terminal | Panel reader input | Usual wire color |
|---|---|---|
WG_D0 |
Data 0 (D0) | Green |
WG_D1 |
Data 1 (D1) | White |
GND |
Reader GND | Black |
General Wiegand practice, not an Akuvox figure: shielded 22 AWG, runs under 500 ft (150 m); check the panel maker's own limit.
On the R20K the terminals are labelled
WG_D0, WG_D1 and GND. The 2-wire models (R20A-2, R20K-2) have
GND, WG_D1 and WG_D0 too.
Set up the Akuvox
Log in to the door phone
Type the door phone's IP address into a web browser. The first login is
admin / admin. On an R20K, press *3258* on the keypad and it says its IP address out loud.
Open Device > Wiegand. On older firmware it is Intercom > Wiegand.
Set Wiegand Transfer Mode to Output
This makes the Akuvox send the number out to the panel.
Pick the same Wiegand format as the panel
Set Wiegand Card Reader Mode to Wiegand-26 or Wiegand-34. It must match the panel's reader port.
Do not pick Customize. It only works when the Akuvox is reading in, not sending out.
Choose how PINs are sent
Under Convert To Wiegand Output, set PIN to the format the panel wants. Skip this step if people only use cards.
| Setting | What the panel gets | How people type the PIN |
|---|---|---|
| 4 bits per digit | Each key as 4 bits. Pressing 1 sends 0001. Most panels want this. |
* PIN # |
| 8 bits per digit | Each key as 8 bits. Pressing 1 sends 11100001. |
* PIN # |
| All at once | The whole PIN as one card number in your Wiegand format. 123456 becomes 01e240 in Wiegand-26. |
PIN, then Confirm |
Leave CRC on. Add a site code only if the panel needs one
Keep Wiegand Output CRC turned on. Turning it off breaks most setups.
If the panel needs a facility (site) code, type it in Facility Code (0 to 255).
Save and test one card
Click Submit. Tap one card on the Akuvox. Check that the same number shows up in the panel's reader log.
0x11 0x22 0x33 0x44 reversed is 0x44 0x33 0x22 0x11.Faces and QR codes
Send a card number when a face or QR code matches
The Akuvox cannot send a face over Wiegand. Set Wiegand Transfer Mode to Convert To Card No. Output. Then give each person a card number in Directory > User. When the face matches, the Akuvox sends that person's card number.
QR codes work the same way. If the panel can read the QR value itself, leave the mode on Output. If not, use Convert To Card No. Output and give the QR code and a card number to the same person.
Unlocking from inside the building
Indoor monitors and the SmartPlus app still open the door through the door phone call. That does not go through Wiegand, so pick one of these:
- Let the Akuvox relay run the lock as well. Simple, but the panel does not see these opens.
- Wire the Akuvox relay (NO and COM) to the panel's request-to-exit input. The panel opens the door and logs every open.
